Today is Global Handwashing Day — a reminder of one of the simplest and most powerful ways to stay healthy.

On average, we wash our hands 8 to 10 times per day — often more when we’re busy, caring for family, handling food, or simply being cautious about staying well. And for good reason: washing our hands helps protect us from viruses, bacteria, and everyday germs, reducing the risk of infection and keeping our communities safe.

But there’s something many people don’t realise about the products we use to wash our hands every day — and how they may be doing our skin more harm than good.

💧 What’s Really in Your Hand Wash?

Most liquid hand washes on the market aren’t actually soap at all — they’re synthetic detergents, made from the same base ingredients as washing-up liquid.

That means every time you wash your hands with these products, you’re effectively washing in a mild household detergent. And while they may smell nice or foam well, these formulas are often stripping your skin’s natural barrier with every wash.

Over time, this constant stripping leaves your skin dry, brittle, and cracked — sometimes even sore or bleeding. It can also make your hands more prone to irritation, redness, and conditions that resemble eczema.

We’ve seen people who believed they had chronic skin complaints experience a complete transformation in just seven days after switching to SNOAP.

🧼 The Science of Soap — and Why It’s Different

True soap is created through a natural process called saponification — the chemical reaction between oils and an alkali. This process produces two key elements that make proper soap so unique:

1️⃣ The Cleansing Element
This part of the soap attracts and envelops dirt, oils, and bacteria, allowing them to be safely rinsed away with water. It removes germs effectively without the need for synthetic detergents or harsh chemicals.

2️⃣ The Nourishing Element: Glycerin
The second element, glycerin, is a natural humectant that draws moisture from the air, helping to keep the skin hydrated and supple. It supports your skin’s natural barrier — protecting it rather than stripping it away.

When you use a true soap like SNOAP, you get both:
🧼 Clean hands free from bacteria, and
💧 Skin that feels soft, nourished, and healthy.

🚫 Why We Don’t Do “Anti-Bac” Soaps

At SNOAP, we’re often asked why we don’t produce antibacterial soaps.
The answer is simple — and it’s something we feel very strongly about.

There is absolutely no scientific evidence that proves antibiotic soaps give a cleaner wash.  Antibacterial soaps often contain harsh chemicals that can contribute to antibiotic resistance, disrupting not only your skin’s natural balance but also the environment’s.

We believe true cleanliness doesn’t require harsh chemicals — just nature, science, and balance.

🌿 Protecting More Than Just Skin

When your skin’s natural barrier is healthy, it does more than just keep your hands smooth — it also protects you from pollutants and irritants in the environment.

It’s worth remembering that 2–5% of what we put on our skin is absorbed into our bodies.
So the more you strip your skin, the more vulnerable it becomes — not only to dryness and cracking but also to the harmful substances it’s exposed to daily.

That’s why washing with SNOAP means more than just getting clean.
You’re nourishing your skin with every wash, reinforcing your body’s natural defences, and protecting both your health and the planet.

"WIN WIN WIN.our skin is not dry just clean & nourished.we are in our 60's & have always struggled with skin products but not with snoap. SNOAP FOR LIFE now nothing else will do." - Colin

"This smells lovely and gives a great lather with just a sprinkle. We are using it as handsoap, and also in the shower with a nylon puff. the sore peeling skin i suffered with in my hands has cleared up completely, which is a fantastic unexpected bonus!" - Deborah

"The bar smells great, and I'm finding it really kind to my skin, whereas I typically find that liquid soaps that we'd previously been using often dried my hands out. I also have sensitive skin, and have had no reactions to this." - Steven
